Periquita's history dates back to the beginning of José Maria da Fonseca's own history, when the company's founder, Mr. José Maria da Fonseca, bought the Cova da Periquita property around 1840.
It was on this property, nowadays almost swallowed up by urban development, that José Maria da Fonseca planted the first Castelão grapes, which he himself had brought from Estremadura. The wine produced in Cova da Periquita immediately proved to be the best in the region, leading to the other owners asking José Maria da Fonseca for rods of that variety to plant on their own properties. In this way, the wine became known in Azeitão as Periquita wine, being marketed by José Maria da Fonseca as Periquita José Maria da Fonseca registered the Periquita brand in 1941. For this reason, Periquita is currently the most old Portuguese brand of table wine marketed, having acquired, over time, a growing popularity in Portugal and considerable notoriety in markets such as Sweden, Brazil, United States of America, Canada, Denmark and Norway.
